He's still putting the finishing touches on his new album, but Jeremy Messersmith does have a new record deal in the can. The Minneapolis singer/songwriter took to the 89.3 the Current airwaves this morning to announce that he has signed with Glassnote Records, the New York-based label behind Mumford & Sons in America. He hopes to make good on the deal with a summer release.

"It was a fun courtship," Messersmith said on air, recounting that he first met the label's namesake founder Daniel Glass at the South by Southwest Music Conference a few years ago. Though he didn't mention it on air, several labels expressed interest in Messersmith around the release of his last album, 2010's "The Reluctant Graveyard." Things got serious as he and studio partner Andy Thompson got deep into the making of the new record over the past year.

"As we were working on it, I was like, 'Some of these songs could be radio songs,' " Messersmith explained.

In addition to the Mumford crew -- who obviously have made a little headway in strumming up radio play -- Glassnote's roster includes Phoenix, the Temper Trap, Childish Gambino and newer buzz bands Chvrches and Daughter. Mr. Glass is a veteran in the record biz who has worked with everyone from Pat Benatar and Billy Idol at Chrysalis Records to Steve Earle and Warren Zevon at Artemis.
