Righthander Jim Hoey is on his way to the Twin Cities as a replacement for righthander Kevin Slowey, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with an abdominal strain.

Hoey was 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in 10 games with the Twins earlier this season. After returning to Class AAA Rochester, Hoey made four cordless appearances, striking out eight over five innings with three walks and eight strikeouts. Jim Rantz, the Twins' director of minor leagues, said Hoey's split-fingered fastball is becoming a pretty good pitch to go with Hoey's fastball.

With Slowey injured and unable to handle a relief role, it will be up to Hoey to help a struggling bullpen.

Lefthander Jose Mijares, in the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow, will join Class A Fort Myers for a minor league rehabilitation stint.

UPDATE: The Twins have made those moves official. They also announced that Slowey will report to extended spring training to rehabilitate his abdominal strain.
